The D I Nikki Barnes Universe
Founding Declaration
Established
10 July 2026
“Stories have the power to entertain.
Stories have the power to educate.
The greatest stories have the power to make us think.
The Nikki Barnes Universe is dedicated to telling authentic stories about people, institutions, justice and the choices that define us.
Every novel.
Every screenplay.
Every character.
Every investigation.
I will strive to leave the reader with not only a mystery solved, but a deeper understanding of the human condition.
This is my promise.”

I am creating what I would call “Institutional Fiction.”
Most crime novels revolve around who committed the murder.
The Nikki Barnes Universe will revolve around a different question:
“Why did the institution allow this to happen?”
That single change distinguishes the series.
For example:
Money Kills
Not just:
Who killed Mei Wang?
But:
How did society create the conditions that allowed her exploitation?
Medicine Kills
Not simply:
Who murdered the consultant?
But:
What happens when healthcare becomes driven by commercial interests rather than patients?
Fame Kills
Not:
Who destroyed the celebrity?
But:
Why has society made reputation more valuable than character?
County Kills
Not:
Who accepted the bribe?
But:
How do good people slowly compromise their principles?
Power Kills
Not:
Who manipulated Parliament?
But:
How is influence accumulated and exercised in modern Britain?
Finance Kills
Not:
Who stole the money?
But:
How do financial systems enable extraordinary wealth while obscuring accountability?
THE MISSION
To create a literary and television universe centred upon Detective Inspector Nikki Barnes that combines authentic institutional knowledge, compelling human drama and intelligent storytelling.
The Nikki Barnes Universe will entertain.
It will educate.
It will provoke thoughtful discussion.
Above all, it will respect its readers by portraying complex issues with humanity and integrity.
Motto
Observe Carefully.
Think Deeply.
Act Compassionately.
THE VISION
“I am not writing crime novels.
I am writing the story of modern Britain through the eyes of one remarkable detective.”
THE VISION
The Nikki Barnes Universe seeks to become Britain’s definitive contemporary crime franchise.
- Not through sensationalism.
- Not through violence.
- Not through impossible heroes.
- But through authenticity.
- The series will examine the institutions upon which society depends.
- Medicine.
- Justice.
- Politics.
- Education.
- Finance.
- Technology.
- Media.
- Every institution exists to serve the public.
- Every institution is ultimately composed of people.
- People capable of extraordinary kindness.
- People capable of profound courage.
- People capable of ambition, compromise and corruption.
The Nikki Barnes Universe exists to tell those stories honestly.
WHY NIKKI BARNES?
Every great fictional universe has one central figure whose perspective allows readers to explore a much larger world.
- Sherlock Holmes has Baker Street.
- Harry Bosch has Los Angeles.
- Inspector Rebus has Edinburgh.
Nikki Barnes has Britain.
She is uniquely positioned to understand the interconnected worlds of medicine, policing and public service.
- Her medical background gives her compassion.
- Her military service gives her resilience.
- Her policing career gives her determination.
- Together they make her more than a detective.
- They make her an observer of society.
- Nikki does not merely solve crimes.
- She seeks to understand why they happen.
WHY BRITAIN?
Britain possesses some of the oldest and most respected public institutions in the world.
- The NHS.
- The justice system.
- Local democracy.
- Universities.
- The Civil Service.
- Financial markets.
- Independent journalism.
- Each carry enormous public trust.
- Each also faces unprecedented challenges.
- These institutions provide not merely settings for stories but living characters.
- They evolve.
- They struggle.
- They succeed.
- Sometimes they fail.
The Nikki Barnes Universe explores both.
THE CENTRAL QUESTION
Every Nikki Barnes story will ask one enduring question:
What happens when power loses sight of the people it exists to serve?
Each novel answers that question from a different perspective.
Money.
Medicine.
Fame.
Local government.
National politics.
Global finance.
Different institutions.
The same human dilemma.
THE READER’S PROMISE
When someone opens a Nikki Barnes novel, I promise five things.
First
- They will enter a believable world.
- Every hospital.
- Every council chamber.
- Every police station.
- Every courtroom.
- Every bank.
- Every committee meeting.
- Will feel authentic.
Second
- The characters will matter more than the mystery.
- Readers should remember people long after they forget plot details.
Third
- Every victim will be treated with dignity.
- Nobody exists merely to advance the story.
- Every death represents a life interrupted.
Fourth
- Readers will learn something.
- Not through lectures.
- Through experience.
- They will come away with a deeper understanding of how society functions.
Fifth
- Hope will remain.
- However dark events become.
- However corrupt individuals appear.
- There will always be people trying to do the right thing.
WHAT I AM NOT
- The Nikki Barnes Universe is not interested in glamourising crime.
- It is not interested in celebrating violence.
- It is not interested in portraying institutions as entirely corrupt or entirely virtuous.
- It is interested in people.
- People making difficult decisions.
- People trying to reconcile personal values with professional responsibilities.
- People attempting to leave the world slightly better than they found it.
MY INSPIRATIONS
This section is not about imitation.
It is about understanding what qualities we admire.
- From Bosch we admire professional integrity.
- From The Wire we admire institutional depth.
- From The Sopranos we admire psychological complexity.
- From Boardwalk Empire we admire historical and political texture.
- From Industry we admire the exploration of ambition, ethics and modern capitalism.
The Nikki Barnes Universe will learn from these traditions while developing its own distinctive voice rooted in contemporary Britain.
THE DISTINCTIVE VOICE
Compassionate Realism
- Not grim realism.
- Not comforting fiction.
- Compassionate realism.
- We acknowledge that the world is complicated.
- Institutions fail.
- People fail.
- Systems fail.
- Yet there remain individuals who strive to act with integrity.
Nikki Barnes is one of those individuals.
THE LONG VIEW
The Nikki Barnes Universe is not intended to be fashionable.
- Fashion changes.
- Truth endures.
- Technology evolves.
- Politics shifts.
- Governments come and go.
- But the questions we ask remain timeless.
- How should power be exercised?
- What is justice?
- What is duty?
- What do we owe one another?
- Those questions will remain relevant decades from now.
THE LEGACY I SEEK
If, twenty years from now, readers say:
“The Nikki Barnes novels helped me understand Britain.” I shall have succeeded.
If viewers say:
“I still think about Nikki Barnes years after finishing the series.” I shall have succeeded.
If young doctors, detectives, councillors, journalists or civil servants recognise aspects of their own lives in these stories, we shall have succeeded.
Success will not be measured solely by sales or viewing figures.
It will be measured by the conversations these stories inspire, and the lasting connection readers feel to the characters.
